RCMP encourages motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to plan ahead as Kananaskis G7 Summit nears

Media Relations RCMP Alberta

Calgary - As the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit approaches, the RCMP Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) is encouraging locals and visitors travelling around Kananaskis to plan ahead and familiarize themselves with official updates on the Controlled Access Zone, road and trail closures, and alternative routes. Information is readily available on the RCMP’s Integrated Safety and Security Group website and AlbertaParks.ca/Advisories.

Wait times expected in Controlled Access Zone

The Controlled Access Zone (CAZ) has been established around key Summit venues until June 18, 2025. There will be a heavy security presence to ensure only authorized personnel, residents, and businesses can access the CAZ.

While measures have been put in place to ensure minimal disruption in the CAZ, the general public is asked to try their best to stay away from these areas as wait times are expected to cause delays in travel. For information on all areas affected, visit: Controlled access zone and air restrictions | Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Highwood Pass Closures

Highwood Pass/Highway 40 South will be closed to all vehicle traffic until it opens on June 21.

Cyclists and pedestrians will not be able to access Highwood Pass from the north until June 20. Cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to access Highwood Pass via the south. Cyclists will be turned around at the top of Highwood Pass just north of the Ptarmigan Cirque parking lot and be required to head back south. There will be increased security presence on the road and signage indicating the locations of closure points.

Parking Ban

A parking ban of all motorized vehicles on Highway 40 from the intersection of Highway 1 to the north winter closure gate at the junction of the Kananaskis Lakes Trail will take effect from June 14 to 18 during the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit. More details provided by the RCMP: News Release.

The ISSG would like to thank motorists, cyclists and hikers in the local communities for their patience and support in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all. The ISSG continues to work closely with local authorities and Alberta Parks to help residents and visitors navigate the area safely.
