Town of Bashaw answers ag society questions over arena
Stu Salkeld
The Town of Bashaw council heard that the local ag society may be involved in plans to have user groups take over management of the community ice arena. The discussion was held at the June 4 regular meeting of council.
Included in the agenda was a draft financial model for user groups to manage the ice arena; Bashaw town council has been talking to the minor hockey and figure skating clubs for months about those groups taking over responsibility for running the arena.
The financial model noted that the Bashaw Ag Society would actually be running the arena, and included 2025 revenue estimates of $102,160.46 based on eight users or contributors, while a 2025 expense estimate based on a number of factors was pegged at $89,035.42. It was noted in the financial estimate that the ag society projected a net income revenue in 2025 of $13,125.04. “This reflects a modest increase in net income compared to 2024, resulting from steady revenue growth and controlled expense increases,” noted the document.
The document stated that clarifications and further discussion were needed around areas like utility costs, revenue diversification, labour costs and unforeseen expenses. It was noted at the end of the document that the financial model would provide a basis for the ag society to negotiate with the Town of Bashaw regarding management of the ice arena.
Coun. Kyle McIntosh stated he was a bit confused about the ag society’s role as he thought minor hockey and figure skating were in talks with the town.
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Theresa Fuller summarized that the Town of Bashaw originally approached the user groups which themselves approached the ag society, as that organization has charitable status and vast experience in managing facilities.
Fuller pointed out the town and user groups remain in negotiations.
Coun. Jackie Northey observed a committee had been formed that approved the ag society’s involvement; she added that user groups hoped to operate the arena for a while and ensure it is a viable enterprise and are still interested in the proposal.
During discussion it was noted many years ago the Bashaw arena was actually operated by the ag society.
Councillors also noted during their discussion the town is seeking a three to four year term for a management agreement.
The CAO added that the town will be meeting with groups this summer to continue negotiations and if all goes well an agreement could be in place by this fall.
